Abby Banks commits to UW-Parkside

SCHAUMBURG, IL - March 7, 2012 - Abby Banks, a midfielder on the Academy United SC 95/96 "Cads" team has verbally committed to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.  As part of the 2013 recruiting class for head coach Troy Fabiano's UW-Parkside team, Banks will join a very successful program that saw the Rangers finish their 2011 campaign with a 13-4-2 record following a 2010 NCAA Sweet Sixteen berth and a 2008 NCAA Elite Eight run.  UW-Parkside competes in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and recorded a conference championship in 2010.  Fabiano's Division II program has produced five All-Americans.

Banks attends Plainfield South HS and she is a starter on Pete Glon's 95/96 Academy team.  She also has been named to the Illinois ODP (Olympic Development Program) State Team in 2009 and 2010 with invites both years to the Region II ODP camp.

"Abby has been a great addition to our pool of student-athletes.  She has demonstrated performance and dedication in the classroom, on the soccer field and also during the community service projects within the Academy program," said Academy Director Peter Glon.  "We wish the very best for Abby and the Banks family."

Academy U16 teams strong at Ohio Elite Showcase

CINCINNATI, OH - February 26, 2012 - The Academy United SC sent two teams to the 2012 Ohio Elite Soccer Academy College Showcase - the 95/96 "Cads" and the North/Central 95/96 team.  Both teams did very well, placing second in their respective divisions.  All the matches were played on turf with near-freezing temps and snow in the forecast for the first two days of the Showcase.

The 96/96 Cads tied Cincinnati CUP Crew Juniors (OH) 2-2 in their opener, followed by a 3-3 draw with host Ohio Elite ECNL.  The team capped of the event with a win over (KY) Mockingbird Valley SC, 1-0.

The North/Central U16 team bounced back from an opening 1-0 loss to Commonwealth SC CSC 96 Chargers (KY) with a 2-1 victory over Cincinnati United Premier Crew Juniors Black (OH) 2-1 and Dynamo FC 96G Red (IN), 1-0.  The two key victories were good enough for a share of the lead for points in their group, but the Commonwealth Chargers took the group based on their head-to-head result.

"This event turned out to be very good for our program," said Academy director Peter Glon.  "We were able to play quality regional competition and give our student-athletes an opportunity to be seen by some good college programs."

Academy WIN initiative helps St. Elizabeth Catholic Community Center make a difference

SCHAUMBURG, IL - January 20, 2012 - While most soccer teams were spending the holidays preparing for the holidays, the Academy United SC U16 teams were engaged in a WIN (What's Important Now) initiative to make a difference for families in the Rockford area who have experienced a range of difficulties - through a service project with St. Elizabeth Catholic Community Center - a United Way Agency.

The project was led by Sydney Wright, Mackenzie Fuller, Ali Lokanc, Haley Chute and Jenna Blodgett.  Abby Nordeen and Kelsea Berg also helped with the project.

The Academy raised a total of about $1,000.00 which was used to purchase Christmas gifts and baskets for three families in need; a total of 14 people in all.  Each Academy team (95/96 Cads, North and Central) were responsible for buying gifts for one of the three families.  While the Academy Central team was competing in Memphis at the Germantown Invitational tournament, the 95/96 team wrapped the gifts at a Christmas sleepover hosted by the Cerny family on December 10th.

Santa made a guest appearance in the Cerny home to give the Cads words of encouragement and holiday cheer to both the student-athletes and parents as well.

A total of 80 gifts in all were purchased, wrapped and given; they represented all the requests of the St. Elizabeth families in the form of clothes, toys and  and personal items.

"This WIN initiative was a great example of our student-athletes making a difference in the lives of others," said Academy director Peter Glon.  "The efforts put forth by all involved really made a significant impact to the families of St. Elizabeth Center.  Our WIN programs continue to be beneficial to both the associations we serve and also for the continued off-field development of our student-athletes."

St. Elizabeth Catholic Community Center was founded in 1911 and is located in Rockford, IL.  Its mission statement is to improve the community through many different programs.

Academy and Albion play to 1-1 tie; Cads fall in PKs

AUBURNDALE, FL - January 3, 2012 - The Academy United SC 95/96 Cads kept their unbeaten streak alive at the Disney Soccer Showcase on Tuesday in Auburndale by virtue of a 1-1 tie with Albion Hurricanes (USYSA National League).

The Cads gave up a strong Albion counter attack midway through the second half, but Jenna Kentgen's header from Alex Bukovac tied the score 1-1 with a few minutes to go in the contest.  The Academy was playing short because of a send-off, but still was able to pressure for the tying goal.

The Cads missed two penalty kicks as Albion carried the consolation title to Houston by converting on four of their five chances.

"We were able to play all of our student-athletes considerable minutes for the college coaches - which was our primary goal," said Academy head coach Peter Glon.  "This is a critical component of our development -  to play at the highest level, at speed and in a national venue."

Over 72 college coaches were recorded as being present and active at the Academy's matches at Disney and Auburndale.

The Academy resumes training in Schaumburg and will begin preparation for the Ohio Elite College Showcase in February.

Cads remain unbeaten - play Albion Hurricanes in semi consolation

AUBURNDALE, FL - January 2, 2012 - The Academy United SC 95/96 Cads kept the unbeaten streak alive with a 2-1 victory over Team Boca (FL) at the Lake Myrtle Complex in Auburndale on Monday afternoon.  Tophat's victory over Match Fit Clelsea 2-1 clinched the third tie breaker for the Hatters - on goals scored (6) to the Cads (5) which sends Tophat into the final against KCFC/Futura.  The Academy will play Albion Hurricanes - the US National League team and state runner-up from Texas-south.

Rachel Stoffregen opened the Cads scoring in the 15th minute as the Academy used a strong tail wind to keep constant pressure in the Boca team.  Several near-misses saw the game head into the half with a 1-0 lead.

Boca tied the game 1-1 midway through the second half on a breakaway, but the Cads found some extra energy and were poised to score the game-winner.  Sophie Pohl scored from 12-yards out in the 68th minute.

Because of the Tophat/Match Fit score, the Cads needed one more insurance goal, but it was not to be.  Two shots off the crossbar and one clear off the Boca line by their GK snuffed the last of the Academy opportunities as the game ended 2-1.

The Academy plays the Albion Hurricanes at Lake Mead Soccer Stadium in Auburndale, FL tomorrow at 9 a.m.  Weather is expected to be much colder.

Determination and grit key Academy comeback against Georgia's best

ORLANDO, FL - January 1, 2012 - In a skilled, hard-fought match under the lights at the Disney Showcase, both Tophat 14 Gold and the Academy United SC showed why soccer is a game of seconds.

Tophat opened the scoring in the 12th minute, but the Cads countered just three minutes later and it appeared the game would enter the halft with a 1-1 tie.  But Tophat broke through to make the score 2-1 with just enough time for the Cads to kick-off on the restart before the halftime whistle.

The second half saw both teams fight tooth-and-nail, with the Hatters getting the best of second half play.  A late surge in the final eight minutes produced quality chances, but Allison Cerny's 18-yard shot into the upper corner in injury time knotted the score at 2-2, which would be the final result.

"There were two very good teams playing tonight, some good soccer that's for sure," said head coach Peter Glon.  "Our student-athletes never quit and fought until the end; just enough for us to earn a point tonight."

The Academy plays Team Boca Monday at 1 p.m. at Lake Mead Soccer Stadium in Auburndale, FL.  At stake is a berth in the finals of the Showcase.

95/96 Cads top Match Fit Chelsea to open Disney Showcase in Orlando

ORLANDO, FL - December 31, 2011 - The Academy United SC 95/96 opened pool play at the 2011 Disney Soccer Showcase with a 1-0 win against Match Fit Chelsea (national #41) from New Jersey.

The match saw play at both ends of the field with each team having opportunities.  Kelsea Berg was able to tap in a cross in the 62nd minute for the game-winner.  The Cads finished off the contest with hard, aggressive play.

"We played a formidable opponent," said head coach Peter Glon.  "This is a very good showcase with the top teams in the U.S. and it is a great opportunity for our student-atheletes to be seen by top college programs."

The Academy faces Tophat (#1 Georgia, #21 nationally) on New Year's Day at 7:00 p.m. at the ESPN Wide World of Sports.

Academy Central/North Cads score three draws in Memphis Showcase

MEMPHIS, TN - December 11, 2011 - The Academy Central/North team didn't lose a match last weekend at the Adidas Germantown Invitational College Showcase.  Three ties notched a second-place finish in the Cads division.

In the first match against Ohio Galaxies FC 95 Premier, Daisy Okpa opened the scoring on an assist from Linda Hucko.  The 1-0 lead stood throughout most of the contest, but a PK was awarded in favor of Ohio Galaxies in the last 15 minutes of the contest.  The PK was converted and the Cads walked away with a 1-1 draw.

The second match saw the Cads take on the American Eagles 97 GW (Texas).  Unlike the first match, the Cads found themselves down 1-0 early in the match.  Emily Novak's free kick proved too much for the Eagles' goalkeeper and the score was even at 1-1.  The Academy mounted a furious attack in the last ten minutes but could not find the back of the net.  The match ended in a 1-1 draw.

The final match on Sunday morning had the Cads facing off against a local Tennessee team, the Lady Lobos Blue.  Although the Lobos had won their first two matches, hard play was abound as both Daisy Okpa and Ryan Cainkar were fouled hard and had to leave the match.  Another Lobo foul against Linda Hucko drew a formal caution from the referee.  Jamie Furio and Danielle Hamzeloo worked together to contain a very speedy Lobo striker on a couple of breakaways.  The Cads almost had the game-winner, but Hannah Tuzi's shot hit the crossbar and the Lobo goalkeeper secured the shutout as the match ended on a 0-0 draw.

"We had plenty of opportunities this weekend, that's for sure," said Academy head coach Jennifer Pfeiffer.  "There was plenty of  good movement, patterns off the ball and physical play in all of the matches.  It was a very enjoyable weekend on and off the field and I am sure our student-athletes were exposed to a very good college showcase experience."

95/96 Cads sweep matches at Atlanta Showcase

DECEMBER 4, 2011 - Kennesaw, GA - The Academy United SC 95/96 team won all three matches at the 2011 Atlanta Final Four Showcase held in Atlanta this weekend, with all of the matches held in conjunction with the NCAA Division I Women's College Cup.

The Academy's first opponent was TNFC Impact, the state cup state finalist from Tennessee.  Two goals from Jenna Kentgen and one by Sophie Pohl added up to a 3-0 Academy lead 35 minutes into the match.  TNFC tallied a lone goal just before the halftime mark and the Cads held off a furious TNFC charge throughout the second half.

On Saturday, the Cads faced North Meck Red, the North Carolina state cup finalist.  Sophie Pohl's free kick in the 24th minute opened the scoring for Pete Glon's club.  Emma Krahmer scored in the 42nd minute and the 48th minute as the Cads set sail and controlled much of the rest of the match.

Sunday's contest saw the Albion Hurricanes from Houston, TX (state cup semi-finalist) battle the Cads to a 0-0 halftime score.  Kentgen headed in an Alex Bukovac corner kick for the match's first tally in the 51st minute.  Emma Krahmer buried another just 10 minutes later for a 2-0 lead.  Lots of help in the defensive third by the Cads gave Adrienne Giglio her second clean sheet of the weekend.

"This was a good weekend for our program," said Peter Glon.  "We were able to give our student-athletes an opportunity to play significant minutes and also to be seen by college coaches.  Our team put together some nice combinations and played very well under pressure from quality opponents."

The Academy will resume training at the Schaumburg Indoor facility on Monday for all teams.  The North/Central team heads to Germantown (Memphis, TN) December 10-11 for the ADIDAS Germantown Invitational and the 95/96 team will travel to Orlando, FL for the Disney Soccer Showcase December 31st.

OCTOBER 30, 2011 - Cleveland, OH - While the entire U16 Academy teams were busy playing soccer this weekend,  Sarah Warren (Cads 95/96 right back) was busy too - skating in Cleveland as she participated in the American Cup 2 - U.S. Junior Short Track Olympic trials.

Her cumulative results in the 500M, 1,000M and 1,500M earned her a spot on the team that will be traveling to Austria this winter to represent the U.S.A.

The short track speed skating events at the 2012 Winter Youth Olympics will be held at the Tyrolean Ice Arena in Innsbruck, Austria from January 20-22, 2012.

"Sarah has not only worked hard on her soccer skills, but also her skating accomplishments have been outstanding," said Academy Director Peter Glon.  "We are all proud of the dedication she gives to both the Academy and her skating career and we support her."

Congratulations to Sarah - the entire Academy Nation is proud of you!

Academy expanding for 2011-2012. Check out the cool video

SCHAUMBURG, IL - FEBRUARY 1, 2011 - The Academy SC today announced expansion for teams U8 to high school with two teams at the U16 level.  The current coaching staff of Peter Glon, Jennifer Pfeiffer and Bunnyray Larmond will be retained with Glon serving in the same capacity as program director and head coach of the U16 college showcase team.

The expansion allows the Academy footprint to grow as it will add new training and match facilities.  The college showcase program will be strengthened - thanks to the success of the current U15 team.

"We are very excited about expanding," says Glon.  "We've come up with options for players to develop at different levels and then progress to as much of a competitive setting that they desire."

The video is a collaboration of a WIN (What's Important Now) initiative by some of the U15 players and it was filmed while the team was at the Disney Soccer Showcase in Orlando, FL.  It shows the various achievements, accomplishments and fun facts that our program offers and how our student-athletes perform at an elite level.
