Cads conquer FC United; build momentum for SLSG Showcase

OCTOBER 26, 2011 - Westmont, IL - The Academy United 95/96 squared off against MRL foe FC United Select on a cold fall night at Ty Warner Park in Westmont.  On the line was bragging rights for the top Illinois spot in the MRL's Premier division.  With the 3-0 win, the Cads moved to within one point of FC with one game in-hand - which they will play the Chicago Pride Academy next week.

Mackenzie Fuller opened the scoring less than five minutes into the contest - burying a free kick from 24 yards into the FC net.  Both teams adjusted to the compact pitch and the Cads brought the 1-0 advantage into the half.

A strong FC surge found the Academy 95/96ers on their heels for the first few minutes of the final period.  As both teams brought up their physical level of play, it was the Academy student-athletes that won more 50-50 balls and challenged the FC possession combinations.

Grae Orndorff clocked a 30 yard blast to put up the Cads' second goal midway through the second period and Jenna Kentgen's left footer on a break was frosting on the cake for the Academy late in the contest.  A very active and stingy Cads defense of Alex Bukovac, Sarah Warren and Abby Nordeen helped Caila Petrie earn her first MRL shutout in goal.

"We pressured the ball very well," said Academy assistant coach/technical director Bunnyray Larmond.  "We've been working hard at training and focusing in on the details and those components really helped a solid effort tonight."

The Academy hosts the Chicago Pride Academy Thursday, November 3 at Olympic Park.

Another weekend split has Cads mixed in tough MRL Premier battle

OCTOBER 23, 2011 - St. Louis, MO - The Academy United 95/96 split two matches this weekend in MRL pool play.  The Cads fell to KCFC Futura Academy 3-0 on Saturday night but came back to beat St. Louis Scott Gallagher Navy 2-1 on Sunday on a beautiful weekend in the St. Louis suburb of Kirkwood.

The Cads started strong in the KCFC match, but two first half goals proved too much for Pete Glon's team.  KCFC tacked on a PK in the second half.

Alex Bukovac's corner kick in the SLSG match found the corner of the net and Emma Krahmer took a pass from Jenna Kentgen for a 2-0 Academy lead.  SLSG rallied in the second half to bring the score to 2-1, but The Academy was able to hold off the charge and salvage three points on the weekend.

The Academy will resumes MRL play on Wednesday, October 26th when it hosts FC United at the Ty Warner field in Westmont, IL.  Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Cads split in Michigan, remain one point out of first in MRL Premier lead

SEPTEMBER 25, 2011 - Grand Rapids, MI - The Academy United 95/96 rebounded from yesterday's loss with a 3-2 win today against Michigan Rush in Grand Rapids.

Jenna Kentgen got the Cads off to a fast start - only 12 seconds into the contest - with an intercepted pass out of the Rush back line.  The Rush tallied the equalizer just before the half with a scramble in front of the Academy net.

Kentgen again tallied to put the Cads up 2-1 midway through the second half.  Mackenzie Fuller found Sophie Pohl whose shot proved too hot to handle and Alison Cerny banged home the eventual game-winner.  The Rush mounted a strong challenge but the Cads collected the three points and remain in the MRL title hunt.

The Academy will resume a MRL one-off as it plays The Chicago Pride Academy in Naperville on Oct. 13.

95/96 Cads bested by Crew Juniors in Michigan

SEPTEMBER 24, 2011 - Grand Rapids, MI - The Academy United 95/96 lost 1-0 today at the hands of Grand Rapids Crew Juniors Gold in regional play.  A 55th minute goal proved to be the difference on a beautiful day in central Michigan.

"We had some chances today," said coach Peter Glon.  "Our energy was not the best today and as a consequence, we fell to a solid team.  We have another match tomorrow and we will work on leaving town with a split."

The Academy plays Michigan Rush on Sunday, Sept. 25 at the MVP complex.

95/96 Cads at top of MRL Premier after Rockford weekend

SEPTEMBER 11, 2011 - Rockford, IL - The Academy United 95/96 MRL team entered the first weekend of competition by netting two wins and one draw - good enough to stay at the top of the table as the team heads to Grand Rapids, MI September 24-25.

In the first match, the Cads defeated Missouri state runner-up WC Arsenal 2-0 in a rematch from last fall's MRL clincher for the Academy.  Goals from Emma Krahmer and Alex Bukovac sealed the win as Adrie Giglio posted the clean sheet - her sixth in eight MRL outings.

Despite trailing 1-0 for most of the second match versus Toro Nuevo - the Nebraska state champion - the Cads rallied behind second-half goals from Jenna Kentgen and two from Mackenzie Fuller.   The final score was 3-1.

Sunday's lone match saw Nebraska's runner-up Omaha FC take on the Academy in Wedgbury Stadium on Rockford's north side.  Sydney Wright's goal in the first minute gave the Cads a lift, but Omaha tied it up minutes mater at 1-1.  Fuller converted a PK - her second of the weekend - as the teams headed into halftime.  OFC scored in the 65th minute to tie the score at 2-2, which proved to be the final tally of the weekend.

The Academy plays Grand Rapids Crew Jrs., a USYSA national league team on Sept. 24 and then plays Michigan Rush on Sunday, Sept. 25.

Academy teams play well in season opening tournament in Milwaukee, net two U16 crowns

MILWAUKEE, WI - August 14, 2011 - The Academy United brought four teams to the 2011 FC Milwaukee Invitational Tournament this weekend and left the Badger state with two championships.

The Academy 95/96 team won three of four contests, including a victory over Wisconsin state semi-finalist Lake County United (10-0) and Wisconsin state champion ECNL FC Milwaukee (2-0).  "Our team played well this weekend, but there are points we need to take from this tournament and work on as we prepare for the next tournament," said Academy director and 95/96 coach Peter Glon.  "Overall, this was a good way to begin the season."

The Academy 95/96 North team won their bracket - scoring 11 goals and only giving up one.  "Our kids - despite having not played together before - really worked hard and played some solid matches," said Bunnyray Larmond, the Academy 95/96 North coach and Academy technical director.  "We are looking forward at our upcoming training sessions to improve our skills and play."

Despite two early losses, The Academy 95/96 Central team rallied to beat SC Waukesha (a 2010 Midwest Regional Team) 1-0 in the final contest on Sunday in a hard-fought match.  "We really were able to put some good combinations together in the Waukesha match," said Academy 95/96 Central coach and Academy Junior director Jennifer Pfeiffer.  "Some teams could have given up on the last Sunday match, but our kids stepped up to the challenge and adapted their games to end the tournament on a good note."

The Academy 98/99 group posted one tie (versus host FC Milwaukee) against two losses on the weekend.  "We are still learning and adapting to new elements of play," said Pfeiffer.  "It's only a matter of time until we start connecting with the back of the net for goals."

All Academy teams retun to action in the Palatine Celtic Cup, held in Palatine, IL on Labor Day Weekend - September 2-5.  The 95/96 team will play U17 and the 95/96 North and 95/96 Central teams will play U16.  The 98/99 team will play U13.  Brackets are posted and the link is below.
