State Cup Recap

Sockers escape Cads in PKs

LOVES PARK, IL - June 17, 2011 - The Academy United SC's run for a state cup title slipped through their hands on a humid and warm day at Sportscore Two as they fell in PKS (3-2) to Sockers FC Chicago.

After falling behind early in the contest, Maddie Dunker headed in an Alex Bukovac corner kick to level the match midway through the first half.  The Sockers once again went ahead 2-1 just a minute before the halftime break.  The match was tied when Mackenzie Fuller knotted the score at two at the 64th minute.

Both teams battled through the rest of regulation time and two 15-minute overtime periods.  The Sockers' GK stopped three Academy shots and that proved to be the difference in the contest.

"We certainly had our chances," said Academy coach Peter Glon.  "When you play an organized, mature team at this level in a state semi-final match, every detail counts.  We must capitalize on every opportunity.   Having said that, we congratulate our opponent and we look forward to next season and continue our program's development with developing our student-athletes both on and off the field."

The Academy has expanded to three player pools next season:  U12/U13 in Westmont, U16 in Schaumburg and U16 in Westmont.  Any players interested in joining the Academy should contact Peter Glon or Jennifer Pfeiffer.

Academy advances to State Cup semis - Sockers next

LOVES PARK, IL - June 12, 2011 - Emma Krahmer's goal in the 70th minute broke a 1-1 tie and proved to be the game-winner as Pete Glon's Academy United U15 charges defeated St Louis Scott Gallagher 2-1 in Rockford on Sunday.

Kelsea Berg was taken down in the box in the 14th minute and Mackenzie Fuller converted the PK to give the Academy a 1-0 lead.  SLSG countered just three minutes later and both teams entered the half in a 1-1 tie.

Constant Academy pressure was rewarded with many opportunities, but a Dunker-Fuller-Kentgen combination found Krahmer for the game-winner late in the contest.

"Obviously we are happy for our student-athletes - that they have earned the right to compete in the semi-finals," said Academy U15 coach Peter Glon.  "We faced a quality opponent today and we were able to give ourselves enough chances that eventually proved to be the difference."

The Academy plays the Sockers FC U15s next Saturday in Rockford.  The other semi-final puts Eclipse Select versus Strikers Fox Valley.

'Cads open 2011 State Cup with win over Rock Run
